Rhoades Scholar Stout

South Shore Brewery Rhoades Scholar Stout.

I have had this stout before, but for some reason I don’t see a review on it. So I’ll do it again.

Not really much info on the 12oz bottle its in, Not even what style of stout it is. So I’ll look it up as I drink it.

Nice blast of Co2 as I lift the cap. On the pour I’m getting a thick plume of tan head. Really nice. A good inch+ of very thick foam. While black, its not completely opaque. There is deep brown highlights where the light is peeking thru along with a good amount of carbonation bubbling up the glass.

Getting a fair amount of chocolate just from pouring. But will need a moment to get the full aroma as this thick head is staying put. Ok After giving the beer a chance to breathe a bit and a few swirls, I am really getting the chocolate now. Very grainy, like Victory/Aromatic/Special Roast kind of grainy. Does smell very sweet, but not the lactose kind. Malty, crystal malt sweet. Nothing for hops or yeast really. There is a bit of Roasted barley aroma,,  it’s there, but not really upfront.

The head is starting to drop a bit now with some more swirling. The first thing about the taste here, is that grainy, wet grainy thing. Not sure its the biggest taste, but the one that grabbed my attention first. Then the roasted barley comes out. But not the big roasty coffee-ish blast.. Its more subdued. But now we are getting hops. Nice Goldings like hop taste. Not much, but really hits the spot in this beer.

Medium body with a wierd foamy mouth feel. Sure it’s higher carbonation, but that foamy thing.. not sure what to make of that.

It’s bittered perfectly, and a good thing or it probably would be too sweet.

I like this beer a lot. But I don’t see what style they are calling it. I if I had to put it in somewhere based on this bottle,, I’d maybe go Irish Stout,, but it’s far to carbonated for that,.. maybe very tame foreign extra stout?

I Iike it. 4 out of 5.

I need to get a few beers made soon. I seemed to have gotten far behind and have started to run extremely low on beers. That’s not good going into fall and winter. (It in fact just snowed a bit today!)

So this first one is a beer that I have brewed for a beerfest or homebrew showcase event, and I just loved this beer.

Jagged: Forign Extra Stout. It was good, but I also think I could improve it.

This post is going to be my notes and thoughts that I normally jot down for all of my beers.

This is very helpful for me because while yes I tend to brew alot of repeat beers, I am also very spontaneous with them at the same time. Substituting things, adding things, correcting things on the fly. So I need to keep track of everything along the way or by…

Hinterland Stovepipe Imperial Stout.

I have had this a few years ago, but never did a post for it.

Ahh yeah. Imperial stout. On tap and poured into a 7oz glass. Very nice dark tan head and jet black. Maybe even more than jet black.

I’m going to let this sit a bit, because it’s very cold. Gotta let this open up and maybe let that head fall to get some aromas.

(10 minutes later..)Ok been warming the beer as best I could, so let’s get into it.

The head did fall and I’m getting a big amount of roast in the aroma. Both the coffee and burnt type roasts are there. Some alcohol and a bit of chocolate-like sweetness. But nothing for hops or yeast contributions.

Looks fantastic. But let’s get to what this tastes like.

Right up front is roast,, but not bite your face off bitter roast.. then alcohol bite. Off in the distance is a hop blast in taste and bitterness. But again, not much for yeast. Really feels like this one has been aged a while and everything is perfectly melded and rounded. Could this be the same batch as the last time I had this??

But longer this warms, the more the alcohol burn takes over. Plus starting to get a chocolate note in there.

Body is not thick, but more than medium and decently carbonated to keep a tingle on your tongue.

I like this one a lot. Roasty. Bitter. No distractions. Although, now that I’m looking at the notes, it says its bourbon aged… but I got none of that.  Oh and it’s 9.5%. what more could you ask for?

Imma gonna have to go.. 4.5/5. I like this alot and will be back for more of this.
