South Shore: Nut Brown

Today I have a style that used to be around everywhere, but has since fell off the end of the Earth. A Nut Brown from South Shore Brewery. I have had their Stout before and was well crafted. Lets see how this Brown ale fares.

Nice coppery body with very thin quickly disappearing off white head

The head fell almost as fast as I poured it. Already getting a carmelly whiff just pouring it.

It is slightly hazy, but not bad. It looks like chill haze if anything.  No signs of carbonations other than the little ring around the edge.

Quite a big grainy, nutty aroma, as one would expect with a Nut Brown. Light Chocolate and caramel malt, but not coming off as being a sweet beer. There is a bit of a yeast note sneaking in there, but it is very light.

Not a lot going on, but what you get is full and pleasant, and it all works together.

The taste is somewhat different from those aromas, A nutty and light raisiny like fruitiness upfront with the chocolate notes pulling them together. Very much reminds me of the old “Chunky” candy bar.

Not as sweet of course, but that chocolate, raisin, and darker crystal malt in such light amounts like this really play good together. Only a subtle bit of hopping and of that yeast note.

Body and mouthfeel are mid range, and that works with the level of carbonation. The lower bittering level lets it taste and feel just slightly sweet and slightly fuller. Now that the beer is warming a little bit is clearing up nicely but even swirling wont bring any head back.

If you are looking for a bold, stand out from the crowd type of beer, this is not the one. But if you are looking for a solid, balanced, even relaxed beer then yes you will like this South Shore Nut Brown.

Its one of those beers that lets the beer show its stuff by being smooth in all aspects.

Just what I need on a Saturday morning. Gotta go with a 4/5. It delivers just what I was expecting it to.
