St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout (or so I’m told)

I stopped in at the local pub to grab a quick drink and I seen they had St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout on tap. Since there is rarely a stout in tap anywhere around here I grabbed one  

I must first mention the description of this beer as presented to me.  

St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout consistently beats out international stouts in blind tastings and competitions. This intensely black ale carries strong hints of espresso and chocolate. The oatmeal contributes body and ensures a long-lasting mocha-coloured head. If you like stout, you will love St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout.”

Well  I’m not sure if they put the wrong description up, or kegged the wrong beer. But that’s nothing like what I had.  

What I got was still a stout but no roasty aromas at all. The only aroma I could pull out of this was a nice but very faint lactose like sweet. Almost reminded me of chocolate milk. and poured with only the thinnest of tan head. 

First sip at first was disappointing as I was waiting for the intense coffee and chocolate. I again only got a slight sweet lightly roasty flavor wrapped in a lighter than Guinness body, but a perfectly dry finish. it took a second, but I liked it.  I really did.  

But then there is the last taste I got. some kind of sourness to it. and since any other review I’ve seen never once mentioned sour, I again think I have the wrong beer. But I like this alot

Dry but sweet. Light roast with just the slightest coffee notes as it warmed. I’d have to call it light body with a kind of powdery feel to it..

Something may be wrong somewhere, but I would in a second make this at home  

The cold truth

Went out Ahnapee brewing this afternoon. I usually have their Two Stall stout, but this time the had a new one. Cold Truth. 

They cold mashed or steeped the black malts. Separate from the main mash. What this does is gives you a far less bitter, acrid burnt flavors but all the coffee notes and deep color. 

 If no one told you, you would sure say this is a coffee stout. But no coffee. So it don’t have that terrible coffee filter taste. 

Totally different taste profile than other stouts but certainly worth it if you like the coffee stouts. 

An Imp Porter. Ten Ninety

Ten ninety. Imperial Porter. Poured for me at Ned Kelly’s Pub Green Bay

Looks pretty going into the glass But no head at all right from the pour.
Slight chocolate aroma but really nothing else but it is cold. Colder than I would like. As I got it warmed a bit started getting bit of grainy, or bready.
It’s very Black. But hints of red peaking out. Looks dead in the glass though. Decent legs make me think it’s going to be hot.
Sour? Something in there. Just the hints of alcohol. But sour or fruit. Like Door County sour cherries.
Now look at bottle. Cayenne? Don’t see that. But it takes a lot for me to see heat. That sour though.. Pomegranate. I get that yea. Do t see any of the roasty or anything that would say Porter to me.

I entirely was blindsided by all of the fruity and cayenne. I didnt read any of the description. But hey, it all works. I like this beer a lot. But would struggle to call it a porter.
For that reason I have to knock it a point or two, as I was expecting some roast or black malt.
I give an Untappd score of 3.
