I got his beer as an Xmas gift last year (2023) but I put it in the fridge and it got moved twards the back and I forgot about it.
But today is the day. It is a 3 Sheeps limited release.. Wolf. A 11.4% Bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout with Pecans, coconut and vanilla.
Alrighty. It is the perfect day, well, when isnt it a perfect day for an Imperial Stout? 3 Sheeps is semi-local brewery in Sheboygan Wisconsin. Very popular because they always have a great line up of beer. Here we go.
I’m going to pour this 12oz can into this tall sided glass. Was expecting a cascade show, but didnt really get anything like that. But there is indication of carbonation running up the sides. Looked like a darker brown rather than black as it poured with a light tan head that appears a bit sticky.
Sticking my nose in in there I immediatly get those pecans. Odd that pecan would be the dominate aroma in an Imperial Stout. Next is the bourbon. Yea, there is a bit of coffee roast, but it is very muted. A big dose of sweetness in there, but nothing for hops or other graininess.
Before taking the first sip I am wondering what this stout is going to be like, since it already doesnt smell like a stout, much less a big stout.
In the first taste the first impression is of heavy thick body, extreme sweetness that reminds me of maple syrup somehow. Caramel, those pecans, and then back to how sweet this is. Then after all of that, the coconut just barely comes out
No where in that first, second or third tasting did roast or hops poke out even a little. the beer its self taste great. It really does. But to call this a stout? Hmmm i dont know.
The beer reminds me of a Wee Heavy. Very low to almost no bitterness, burnt sugar with raisins (work that as a positive) No hop presence, no yeast character. Sweet, heavy body, low carbonation ,,, but it (somehow) tastes great. And there is generally no indication of that 11.4% abv.
That was 100% not how I thought this would turn out. But I did in fact like this ‘beer’
How to rate it though? On a Stout scale, which is what we do here, I really have to give this a 1.5/5 There is nothing stout about this beer what so ever.
But on a beer rating scale,, 4/5. Regardless of how sweet and heavy this Wolf is, I could surely have 2-3 of them. Be careful with this one. 11% and smoooooth.
Your mileage may vary greatly with this, but I like it. Wolf Imperial “Stout” 3 Sheeps brewing.
