So for a pre review note. I have had this beer years and years ago. I did not like it. Not just this beer, but most coffee beers in general. But I have heard things about this one again, so here comes Green Bay’s Hinterland Brewings’s Luna Coffee Stout.
I seen this on tap at The Glass Nickel in Green Bay. Another good place in town to find craft beer. I was happy to see that this stout was NOT on nitro. I do beleive that Luna Stout does come in nitro in the canned version.
Some quick numbers.. 5.8% 32 IBU. And I had a pint pulled from the tap. What gets me with almost all coffee beers, and this one in the past was no exception,, is that the coffee in the beer ends up tasting like celery. The coffee may be good, but some how that green celery leaf taste just cuts through everything. But we will see.
So I of course didn’t get to pour it my self, but it came with a very nice looking medium tan, medium build head with nice tight bubbles. Too dark to see if there was any carbonation, but the edges looked clear and dark brown.
But wow! The roast coming off this pint! Big roast. Almost bready grain. The I get coco and even a bit of caramel… but also something like dirt or clay… but in a good way. But whats curiously missing is any coffee notes.
In the actual taste it is much the same as the aromas its kicking out, but much tamer than this beer looks like it should have. Roast and that coco are the big tastes.. but again,, nothing for that coffee. But I think for me, thats good!
The body is much lighter that it looks and has a powdery feel to it. Not like particulates or grit,, just… something.
Not over or under carbbed, and not very bitter, but it is there keeping things in check.
I am impressed. I used to hate this beer. But now that the coffee aftertaste is gone,, maybe too much gone, as there is nothing coffee about it,, I rather like it. I will draw the line at the Nitro versions of it though.
If I can find it non Nitro’ed I will pick it up,, but Hinterland beers are usually at a very premium price, so maybe in a pic six first to see how it is.
I will give a very nice 4 out 5 on a beer that I expected to hate.
As an addon, the coffee used in the Luna Stout is also local. Can check that out at the Luna Cafe.
